Louise Brooking Biography
Born in St. Anthony, Newfoundland and raised in Gander I spent many of my childhood summers on a boat in Bonavista Bay, with my 4 brothers and sisters, and winter riding a Skidoo in Joe Batts Arm. I moved to Halifax in 1985 with my two children where I quickly learned to realize that the Maritimes is certainly the place to live. After raising my children I continued to enjoy the world of arts through painting with water colors and music with guitar and piano. I wrote my first song on a ferry from St. Anthony to Labrador during a visit and have been continuing down that singer songwriter road ever since. I also enjoy other musical instruments as well as learned the snear drum with a Pipe and Drum Band and had the opportunity to travel to Holland during the WWII Liberation Ceremonies in 2010. I have had the privilege to teach many children and adults in my neighborhood the fun of learning the guitar and piano.
I am a Volunteer at the Grand Lake /Oakfield Community Society where I have held the position of Secretary for over 14 years. With that Position I have evolved into the Director of the GLO Youth Performers and have written and directed on stage performances. A few that come to mind are "The Best Christmas Present Performance" 2012 as well as "The Nativity Scene" 2013. I am in the process of writing others as well for 2014.
I have a Certificate in The Fundamentals of Arts though a Home Correspondence Course from the Art Instruction School. I have received awards on my paintings during judged showings. I am a Watercolor Instructor and that has lead me to the illustration of a Children's Book called:" Archie the Pit Rat Hero". This book was published through Breton Books in 2007 and through the WITS Program (Writers in the Schools) each year these school bookings take the Author and me to all corners of Nova Scotia with the book presentation to the children. I use a hand held rat puppet and talk to the children about being creative through drawing and how to bring anything in your mind to life on paper.
In 2009 I published a Music CD with 5 Songs. 4 of the songs are my original while one was written by a dear friend Gary Cook whom I met at Stan Fest Folk Festival many years ago. One of my other great accomplishments is the release of my music video "Cup of Soul" which was directed by Glen MacIsac from Media Solutions.ca.
